How Much Are My Beliefs Who I Am?

You can break free of limiting beliefs
You can break free of limiting beliefs

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself: Are my beliefs truly who I am? Or are they simply patterns I have learned over time—stories I tell myself, rules I follow, fears I protect myself from?

We often live as though our beliefs are the narrative of our life, shaping how we see ourselves and the world. These beliefs can feel like the absolute truth, but what if they are simply the wallpaper of our mind—something we have lived within for so long that we mistake it for reality?

Are You Living Inside Your Beliefs?

Our beliefs often dictate our identity. You might think of yourself as:

  • A provider – responsible for everyone’s wellbeing.

  • A good worker – valuable only through productivity.

  • A success – defined by achievement and status.

  • A survivor – shaped by past pain and avoiding future harm.

Or you might feel trapped by beliefs that say:

  • I must always be strong.

  • I have to earn my worth.

  • I can’t trust people.

  • I am broken because of my past.

These beliefs feel like part of who we are, but they are not. They are learned through experience, shaped by what we’ve been told, and reinforced by what we’ve been through. The problem? When we mistake them for our true self, we become stuck inside them—repeating the same patterns, fearing change, and living with limits that were never meant to define us.

Your Beliefs Are the Wallpaper—Not the Walls

Imagine your mind as a house. The beliefs you hold are like the wallpaper—colours, patterns, and textures that shape your experience. Some of this wallpaper was chosen by you, but much of it was put there by others: parents, teachers, society, past experiences.

If you’ve only ever lived in a room with one kind of wallpaper, it’s easy to think that’s just the way things are. But wallpaper is not the structure of the house. It can be changed. You were born without judgement, without labels, without rules for living. You were born free.

How to See Beyond the Wallpaper

When we start to notice our beliefs as something separate from our true self, we create the possibility for change. Instead of being trapped inside them, we can step back, observe them, and ask:

  • Is this belief serving me?

  • Did I choose this, or was it given to me? (we can 'inherit' beliefs from our family or society...)

  • What if I believed something else?

Breaking Free: Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, and RTT

If you feel stuck inside your beliefs, there are ways to soften their hold and step into greater freedom.

🔹 Internal Family Systems (IFS) – Helps you recognise the parts of you that cling to certain beliefs for safety and protection. IFS helps you move beyond these limits and reconnect with your core self—your Self energy, which is free from fear, judgement, and conditioning.

🔹 Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – Allows you to process and release old experiences that cemented limiting beliefs, helping you rewire the way your brain interprets past events.

🔹 Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) – Uses hypnosis and cognitive techniques to uncover and shift the deep-rooted beliefs that hold you back.

You Are More Than Your Beliefs

You are not the labels, fears, or expectations you have carried. You are so much more than the wallpaper you were given. The more you learn to see your beliefs as something separate from yourself, the more freedom you have to create new possibilities, new perspectives, and a life that is truly yours.

If you are ready to explore what’s beyond your beliefs, I offer IFS, EMDR, and RTT to help you step into a more empowered, open, and joyful way of being.

You were born free of limiting beliefs and you can live free.

You are welcome to get in touch for a free consultation. I would be happy to talk more about how your beliefs are getting in the way of the life you want.
